History of the Château

At the end of the hundred years war, when Aquitaine became French for the last time, the great land owning seigneurial barons of the ENTRE-DEUX-MERS, in an attempt to rejuvinate their devastated region, offered their lands to their powerful neighbours of the Perigord, Poitou and Charentes regions for management in return for a pitance.

It was thus that "LA REOLE" today "CHATEAU DE CAMIAC et SAINT-DENIS" was given over to the management of "CAPITAINE JEAN CHATARD" from Perigord.

At the time the property LA REOLE was known to have forty hectares (approx 85 acres). It was not until 1834 that François Chaumet, a prominent doctor in his time, built the actual CHATEAU thanks to a treasure found in the stables. A treasure, so they say, left by the Templars, representing only a fraction of an enormous treasure said to be hidden in many different points on the property still to this day unfound.

The architecture of Camiac draws its inspiration from the Renaissance style offering a harmony of sculptured stone and slate roofing that dominates the gentil rolling countryside contrasted by vineyards and wheat fields and is most certainly to be considered one of jewels of the entire region.

The legend of Camiac states that the spirit of the fairy Mélusine, chased by her lover Merlin the Wizard, still haunts the little stream that runs down behind the Chateau under the wooden bridge.
